Learning how to count, the distance between numbers and the right order of numbers all are basic skills that children who have dyscalculia may have a hard time to acquire.
Also learning to see quickly how many points there are on a die and how to add the numbers on the dice or how to estimate how many places to go until a certain place on the board, are all skills we may take for granted but are a challenge for the ones struggling with math.
The time of year when the holidays bring families together and the weather creates opportunities for long evenings at home, is an excellent opportunity to help them, just by playing some of their favorite board games.
The interactive games on a tablet are great and certainly provide options for working on their early math skills but we always say: ” They need to get it into their hands before they can get it into their heads ” and so the handling of the game pieces and the “walking” the pieces up and down while counting their steps are a great training opportunity and fun to do.
